Karaoke at Home

“It’s a quarter after one, I’m all alone, and I need you now.”

Actually, It’s 5 in the morning, and I can’t sleep because where I was only two days ago, it’d be 6 in the afternoon (Japan) and 5 pm where I was a week ago, in the Philippines.

This Lady Antebellum song, which I don’t really like much, was a song often played on the radio and in malls in the Philippines and is now one in a rotation of many songs stuck in my head.

When they say that every Filipino family has a karaoke machine, it’s barely an exaggeration. Perhaps not every single household has one, but you can trust that a close relative will and that there will be one in any and all family celebrations.

While I’m awake and missing home — yes, I was born and raised in Toronto, but after this trip I like to think of the Philippines as home now — I thought I’d start a little video project, just a simple series of posts of YouTube videos. (My brain is too exhausted to do something more productive like all the critical readings I need to start.)

So my next post will be the start of my little series of songs sung on the karaoke by my family, songs that are also now stuck in my head. Posts may be sporadic, depending on how poor my memory is. Stay tuned! (Cheesy pun intended.)
